發電機是指將其他形式的能源，轉換成電能的機械設備。其工作原理都基于電磁感應定律，和電磁力定律。用適當的導磁和導電材料，構成互相進行電磁感應的磁路和電路，以產生電磁功率，從而達到電磁能量轉換成電能的目的。發電機共分為：直流發電機和交流發電機；交流發電機又分為：同步發電機和異步發電機；交流發電機還可分為單相發電機與三相發電機。發電機是由外殼、定子、轉子、整流二極管、碳刷和電壓調節器所組成。現在的汽油電噴發動機上，采用的都是三相交流發電機。發電機在汽車上的作用，就是用來給車輛上的所有用電設備（不算起動機）供電和給蓄電池進行充電的部件。
